Paolo Lorenzi of Italy outlasted eighth-seeded American Tenny Sandren 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-4 on Monday in the first round of the New York Open.
Sandgren was playing for the first time since the Australian Open. He has lost both matches since winning the ASB Classic in January for his first ATP title.
Also, Australian Bernard Tomic beat Lucas Lackoof Slovakia, 6-4, 6-2. He will next face top-seeded John Isner of the U.S.
Isner became the highest-ranked player in the second-year tournament at the Nassau Memorial Veterans Coliseum when defending champion Kelvin Anderson had to withdraw due to a right elbow injury.
Seventh-seeded Jordan Thompson of Australia beat American Noah Rubin, 6-7 (7), 7-5, 6-1.
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- No. 6 seed Nicolas Jarry of Chile was eliminated in the first round of the Argentina Open on Monday.
Italian Lorenzo Sonego knocked out Jarry with a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3 victory at Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.
Albert Ramos Vinolas of Spain, Christian Garin of Chile and German Maximilian Marterer also advanced.
Ramos Vinolas beat Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-3, 6-4, and Garin eliminated Felix Auger Aliassime of Canada with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at the clay-court tournament. Marterer posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over local favorite Facundo Bagnis.
Australian Samantha Stosur was knocked out of the Qatar Total Open in the final round of qualifying after she was defeated in three sets by Russian Anna Blinkova on Monday.
World No. 95 Blinkova won 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 30 minutes to reach the main draw in Doha and will face No. 7 seed Anastasida Sevastova in her opening game.
China's Lin Zhu also qualified for the main draw with a win over American Alison Riske while Australian Ajla Tomljanovic and Czech karolina Muchova also progressed to seal their berths.

World No. 3 Simona Halep is the No. 1 seed in Doha, and is joined in the main draw by other top players such as world No. 5 Carolina Pliskova, world No. 6 Angelique Kerber and world No. 7 Elina Svitolina.
